If there's one place that truly embodies the essence of the Shuswap Region, it's undoubtedly Copper Island. Standing atop its summit, one is treated to awe-inspiring vistas of the shimmering lake, embraced by verdant hills and majestic mountains. This lone natural island in Shuswap Lake boasts a diverse array of ecosystems, from lush cedar forests to dry grasslands, offering an unparalleled experience for adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Reaching Copper Island is an adventure in itself, a mere half-hour canoe paddle away from the Shuswap Lake Provincial Park boat launch. The journey, though occasionally challenged by the waves and exhaust fumes from passing speedboats and jet-skis, is well worth the effort. Only three access points and a 2.8 km trail network are available, with the east point being the ideal spot to dock a boat. This limited accessibility has been thoughtfully maintained over the years to safeguard the island's pristine nature, discouraging camping or any activities that may harm its fragile ecosystem.

The rich history of Copper Island dates back to 1945 when it was designated as a UREP (use reserved for the enjoyment of the public) under the Forest Act. In 1956, this 115-hectare paradise was purchased for a mere $37,000, transforming it into a Class A Park. As the years passed, the island's protected area expanded, with an additional 25 hectares of foreshore surrounding it added in 1993.

Steeped in legends and tales from the Shuswap people, Copper Island holds a mystical allure. The island is said to be significant to the indigenous people, evident through a few remaining pictographs etched onto the rocks. Legends speak of a great bear named Ta Lana, who sleeps soundly in a vast cave beneath the island, lending its name to the bay in the north. Other tales recall mysterious creatures resembling human beings with fish-like tails, dwelling in a cave at Adams Lake before journeying to Copper Island, where they were known as "Kul-a-moo-whot-kwa" or water people.

Visitors from all corners of the Shuswap flock to Copper Island, enticed by the thrill of cliff diving into the seemingly bottomless drop-off. During busy summer weekends, the island's perimeter becomes a playground for numerous speedboats. Yet, beyond the bustling atmosphere, tranquility awaits for those who venture along the hiking trails that meander through the island's heart.

In our recent exploration of Copper Island, we skirted past the cliff jump water circus to uncover the island's hidden gems. We stumbled upon a private houseboat gently moored, and a family enjoying a delightful picnic on the backside. The crystal-clear waters beckoned us for a refreshing swim off the rocky beach, while curious baby ducks and a nimble mink delighted us with their presence.

As the only natural island in Shuswap Lake, Copper Island remains an enchanting oasis, accessible only by boat or, for the daring, a strong swimmer. Its history, legends, and untouched beauty enthrall all who seek to uncover its secrets. The island's aura of mystery and natural splendor continues to captivate the hearts of all who grace its shores, reaffirming Copper Island as a timeless jewel of the Shuswap region.

Come, let us embark on an unforgettable journey to the enigmatic Copper Island, where legends intertwine with reality, and nature's wonders await your discovery!
